Hard Clipping

Technical Detail:

Soft Clipping

"Gradual saturation with smoother harmonic content. The signal is progressively compressed as it approaches the threshold."

Technical Detail:

Uses a hyperbolic tangent or similar curve to gradually reduce gain as signal increases. Preserves more of the original dynamics.

Tube Saturation

"Asymmetric warmth emphasising even-order harmonics. Positive and negative peaks are processed differently."

Technical Detail:

Asymmetric transfer function where positive peaks are compressed more than negative. This asymmetry creates even-order harmonics perceived as "warm".

Fuzz

"Extreme clipping approaching square wave. Creates dense harmonic content and heavy compression."

Technical Detail:

Very low threshold with aggressive clipping creates near-square waves. The original waveform is almost completely replaced by a new, harmonically rich signal.
