Level
Play runs the pattern round two bars. Hold: dry plays the untouched take from the same point, so you can hear what the cut removed or the fade changed. The space bar plays and stops.
Take
a splice
Two takes, two edits. The vocal is a splice: a held note shortened by removing a section, so the join has a sound on both sides. The cymbal is a trim: one region ended, with silence after it, on a sound that decays for longer than it looks.

Where region A ends. The small drawing is the last two milliseconds of A against the first two of B, and the coral bar between them is the jump a hard cut makes there. Zero crossing moves the cut to where the wave comes up through the centre line, on both sides, so there is nothing to jump.
Fadenone
a hard cut: no fade
A crossfade: region A fades down while region B fades up, across this many milliseconds centred on the cut. Ten milliseconds removes a click; a few hundred is a transition you can hear. The shape decides the level through the middle: linear dips, equal power holds.
